Proven digital strategies to build your digital presence, generate local leads, and book more jobs.
Every contractor misses calls. You are under a sink, on a roof, or driving between jobs, and the phone rings. Most of the time you call back when you can. Sometimes that is four hours later.
The question worth answering is what those four hours cost you, in your own numbers rather than someone else’s.
Three figures give you a usable estimate. The first is how many calls you miss in a normal week — your phone records this, and most contractors are surprised by it. The second is your average job value. The third is the share of callers who would have booked if you had answered.
That last one is a judgment call, and it is worth being conservative. Take the calls you missed last week, multiply by your average job value, then take a quarter of that. Whatever number you land on, it repeats every week.
A homeowner with a leak is not shopping. They are solving a problem, and they will keep calling numbers until someone picks up. By the time you ring back, the job is often already booked with whoever answered first.
None of that is a reflection on your work or your price. It is a question of who was available at the moment the decision was made.
Three options, in order of effort. Answer more calls, which means either carrying the phone into places it should not go or hiring someone. Send an automatic text the moment a call goes unanswered, so the conversation stays open. Or put an answering system on the line that qualifies the job and books it while you work.
The first costs you focus. The second costs almost nothing and recovers a share of what you were losing. The third recovers most of it, and it works at 9pm on a Saturday.
Pull your call log and count the unanswered calls from the last seven days. Not the month, not the year — one week, because that is the number that keeps repeating. Then decide whether it is worth doing something about.
